Surface finishes and heat treatment

Finishes are applied by specialist shops that work with the factory. They are part of your quote, your order and your inspection: masked faces, coating contact points and faces re-machined after coating are agreed with you before production.

03Masking

Bare faces

Electrical contact faces, locating faces and threads may need to stay bare. Show them on the drawing. The factory masks them, or re-machines them after coating where masking is not reliable.

04Contact points

Hanging marks

Parts are hung or racked during anodizing, plating and PVD coating, and the contact points leave small marks. Their position is agreed with you in writing, away from cosmetic faces.

05Tests

Salt-spray tests

Where your drawing requires a salt-spray test, the factory can run it, and the result is reported with the parts. Please state this with the RFQ, so that the test is included in the quotation.

06Specify

Name the black finish

Black oxide, black anodizing, black PVD and QPQ are different processes with different appearance, thickness and corrosion behavior. The process named on the drawing is the one used; any change requires your written approval.

07Other finishes

Other finishes on request

If your drawing calls for a finish that is not listed here, name the process and its specification with the drawing. We confirm with the factory before the quotation, and if it cannot be met, this is stated together with a proposed alternative.

08FAQ

Questions about finishes

Who arranges finishing?

Finishes are applied by specialist shops that work with the factory. Coating contact points and masked areas are agreed with you before production.

How do we mark faces that must stay bare?

Show them on the drawing as masked faces. Contact faces can be re-machined after coating. This is agreed before production.

Can anything change without my approval?

No. No change to material, finish, process or drawing interpretation goes ahead without your written approval.

What if my drawing calls up a specific standard?

We place the order with a factory that works to it, and the parts are inspected to it. If a requirement cannot be met, this is stated before the quotation, together with a proposed alternative.
