Cutting, forming and joining

  • Laser cutting

Flat patterns cut on fiber lasers from your DXF or from the flat pattern of your 3D model. Slots, windows and hole patterns are cut in the same pass, so their positions relate to each other.

  • Press-brake bending

Bends formed to your drawing. Bend radii, relief cuts and the order of bends are reviewed with the factory at the drawing stage, so the flat pattern and the tooling match the part.

  • Welding

Welded frames, brackets and enclosures. Weld locations, type and finish of the weld seam are taken from your drawing; where the drawing does not define them, this is raised before the quotation.

  • Hardware and riveting

Press-fit nuts, studs and standoffs, and riveted assemblies. Riveting is done in fixtures built for your part, so repeat batches stay identical.

Tolerances and inspection

Tolerances come from your drawing and specification. Your drawings go to the production engineers of the factory selected for your part. If a tolerance or a feature cannot be held, we raise it before production, and any change to the drawing is confirmed and approved by you in writing. Production is to the drawing.

Sheet-metal parts carry two kinds of tolerance: on cut features, which come from the laser, and across bends, which add up with every bend. If a dimension across several bends is critical, mark it, and the factory plans the bend order and fixtures around it. Flatness after welding and the position of press-fit hardware are reviewed as standard at drawing review.

Inspection and documents

The factory inspects each order to your drawing or QC sheet and supplies a report. Our team in China then carries out an independent quality verification at the factory, after production and before the goods are released, and the packing is photographed. Where you specify 100% inspection, every part is inspected. Where first articles are required, series production is released only after your written confirmation. Material reports or certificates are supplied where your drawing or PO requires them.

Design notes

  1. From a past order

Check thread engagement in thin sheet.

A #4-40 thread in 2 mm sheet leaves little engagement. The factory raised it at drawing review, before production, and a press-fit nut was agreed in writing.

  2. Engineering note

    Hold the temper as drawn.

Aluminum sheet in H32 and H34 bends differently. A change of temper is made only with your written approval.

  3. Engineering note

Dimension from the features that matter.

Dimensions across several bends accumulate tolerance. Dimension to the holes and faces that locate the part in your assembly.

  4. Engineering note

    Plan rivets with a fixture.

Flush rivets depend on the riveting setup. State the flushness requirement on the drawing; the factory plans the riveting fixture for the part before production.

What to send for a quote

  • PDF drawing with tolerances, bend details and revision letter
  • STEP model and, if you have one, the DXF flat pattern; state which is the master
  • Material, thickness and temper
  • Finish, color and cosmetic faces
  • Hardware: part numbers or type of nuts, studs and rivets
  • Quantities: prototype set, first batch and expected yearly volume
  • Documents you need with the parts

Questions

Do you produce single prototypes in sheet metal?

Yes. Laser cutting and press-brake bending need no part-specific tooling for most parts, so prototype sets are practical. Any fixture or special tool your part requires is stated in the quotation.

Can you weld and paint the same part?

Yes. Welding is done by the factory, and painting by a specialist shop that works with it. Masked faces and cosmetic surfaces are agreed before production.

Do you install press-fit hardware?

Yes, press-fit nuts, studs and standoffs, to the part numbers or types on your drawing. See the design note on threads in thin sheet.

What files do you need?

The PDF drawing and a STEP model. A DXF flat pattern is welcome; state which file is the master if they differ.
